In the heart of the captivating rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His life was mostly untarnished, simple, and honest. His primary duty was to care for his herd of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the wind across the solo tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day upon day, looking out for his wards instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.
Tales of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to help but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. However, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was here then.
